Started in the late '90s as a collaboration between a Gypsy Jazz guitar player and an ex-Taylor employee, Dell’Arte has answered the call to players looking for accurate vintage replicas in the style of the original Selmer and Maccaferri guitars, which are currently fetching astronomical prices. The guitar an open and dynamic quality thats very easy to appreciate. Designed in the USA and built in China, the Pigalle has a solid spruce top, rosewood back and sides, a mahogany neck, a rosewood fretboard and mustache bridge, a brass Maccaferri-style tailpiece and an oval-hole soundhole with a Selmer-style rosette. This Django-style model is designed for lead playing and has the forward midrange and treble frequencies to get you there, with tight low end and great string to string separationProfessionally setup with low action and solid intonation. ADIRONDACK, or RED Spruce, is an extremely strong, stiff wood with the highest cross-sectional strength and across-the-grain stiffness of all the spruces. In addition, it consistently rates at the top in strength-to-weight ratio. Unlike SITKA spruce, it seldom shows bearclaw figure and the medullar rays are more muted, as in ENGELMANN, European or White Spruce. RED spruce was preferred by wood-frame airplane builders early in the 20th Century and also found extensive use for piano soundboards even earlier. Instrument makers such as Gibson and Martin found it made superb tonewood for flattop guitars, archtop guitars, and mandolins. The legendary pre-1945 Martin and Gibson guitars had tops and bracing of RED Spruce as did the famous Lloyd Loar F-5 mandolin. C.F. Martin and Gibson began switching to Sitka in the mid-1940s. Better availability and consistency in the appearance of SITKA were major factors. However, many people believe ADIRONDACK (RED) Spruce to be tonally superior. The sound of the old instruments constructed of ADIRONDACK, as well as the results achieved by present-day makers, tend to support that belief.Today, many high end guitarmakers are continuing the RED spruce tradition and customer awareness is growing. Buy a new Eastman with ADIRONDACK (RED)spruce top and enjoy that superior tone!.

The Hummingbird Custom is one of Gibson Acoustic’s most popular Custom Shop models. Handmade at the Custom Shop in Bozeman Montana, this model is based on the company’s original Hummingbird, which was first released in 1960. Few guitars in the company’s line of fine acoustic and electric guitar have as much lavish ornamentation, though the overall effect is anything but gaudy. This instrument features a headstock and bridge bearing custom inlaid Hummingbirds in flight, each hand engraved and made of solid mother-of-pearl. The top of the Hummingbird Custom is constructed of solid Sitka spruce, while the back and sides are hand-selected SUPERFLAMED koa, a timber found only in the Hawaiian Islands. For amplification and recording, almost all the players interviewed use the Sunrise soundhole pickup (Sunrise Pickup Systems, 8101 Orion Ave. #19, Van Nuys, CA 91406). Much of the Sunrises mystique follows David Lindleys sound and his declaration, "Its got magic stuff in it!" Manufacturer Jim Kaufman identifies the Sunrises "magic stuff" as its quick response, sonic imaging, pole pieces that make an audible difference when adjusted, and ability to move with the guitars top. For microphones, Lindley and Harper favor vintage tube mikes like the AKG C-12 and M-50, while other players mention high-end Neumanns, like the U-67 and U-87. For live performances, Bob Brozman mixes a Sunrise with workhorse Shure SM-57 mikes "because thats what everybody has, so I adapt." .
