Airline

Airline Town & Country by Valco. 1959ca.

Blonde. 3 pickups. TT hc. "Airline guitars were being made in USA from 1958-1968 by Valco Manufacturing Company and sold primarily through the Montgomery Ward catalog company. Valco also made other popular brands like Supro and National. Today they are being made through Canadian company Eastwood Guitars. By the early 1960’s Airline were producing many different models – the more valuable vintage models were made of res-o-glas – but most in those early days were solid wood designs like this Town and Country Standard. 1950's Airline Town & Country Standard Electric Guitar (Sunburst) Although they appear to be humbuckers, these unique guitars had single coil pickups with a unique tone that became popular with the blues players That is what modern players are seeking out these old guitars, like Jack White, for the growl-y single coil tone. This sample had three pickups, each with its own volume and tone controls, and a 3-way switch. This has its good and bad point. Good: you can have solid pre-sets for each pickup both in tone and volume that are completely unique. Bad: you miss the “in-between” tones that make the Strat so popular. A master volume rounded it out. Another unique feature of this model was the rather crude “tone chambering” of the body. On the 60’s version, they simply drilled huge holes in it to remove wood and remove the weight, then slapped an over-sized plastic back on it to cover up the holes. Crude but effective..

Kay Custom Kraft Color Dynamic model 4155 Midnight Special in Dazzling Sparkle Black 1961-1962.

Checker binding! In 1961, SLM changed orders with Kay and converted its Thinlines to a new series of Custom Kraft Color Dynamic Electric Guitars. Basically, these were identical to their Kay siblings except for being available in cool new colors; the 4153 was the Red Fury in Bright Fire Engine Red, the 4154 was the White Crusader in Pure Snow White, and the 4155 was the Midnight Special in Dazzling Sparkle Black. All listing for $99.95 with a highly polished case, cord, and neck adjustment key. Beyond the names of the colors, these were some of the best model names ever! Made of laminated maple with a bolt-on (probably) maple neck. Nize dark Rosewood fingerboard. The top and rosewood fingerboard are bound in cool checkerboard celluloid. The single-coil pickups are stock Kay units. These are decent little guitars with respectable output, perfect for romping through Duane Eddy licks or the “Guitar Boogie Shuffle!” The pickups have that sparkling clarity only a single-coil can deliver. Plus, if you’re not as young as you used to be, you’ll appreciate the light weight of the hollow body! The Kay Thinline series was offered through 1965, but SLM’s Custom Kraft Dynamic Colors seem to drop from sight after ’62. Whether or not they also made it through ’65 is not known. ..

Kay Titan 3 Deluxe Artist. 1965

All original pots dated year 1965. The guitar has a walnut body, Kay tremolo system, three silver-blue ‘kleenex box’ pickups, three-way switch, a Rosewood bridge. Kluson tuners. Real Mother-Of-Pearl inlays in the great Rosewood fingerboard. The input jack is located at the back of the body! There are the usual signs of wear and minor paint chipping, This is a rare, classic guitar. The electronics, and tuners were the highest quality offered at the time. The three-way switch settings are 1) neck/middle, 2) middle, and 3) middle/bridge. On setting three, if you turn the tone pot to 10 the pickups go out of phase. The pickups are fat, single coils that produce a deep resonant sound that breaks up beautifully on an overdriven amp. The guitar is set up and ready to play.. 13900 SEK

Kay Twin Thin Silvertone 1381 Jimmy Reed 1957.

Soon ready... 1957 SILVERTONE-THIN TWIN 1369L ("JIMMY REED") Model Made by Kay in Chicago . GREAT tone, unique vibe and character-a collectors model. Sunburst, semi-hollow body, electric guitar. Finish is very good and original , laminated maple body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard. These are fabulous rare guitars and this is in superb condition for its age The guitar is all original and it plays incredibly with low action all the way up the neck. The "Thin Twin" models were offered between 1955 and 1958 in the Sears catalogs. The 1955-56 models had a white engraved headstock while the 1957-58's had black. It's nickname comes from the two very thin pickups (with huge hot refrigerator magnets.) Aside from some cosmetic differences it's identical to the Kay guitar Jimmy played (Kay model: K-161). It comes with a hardcase. Overall length is 40 in. (101.6 cm.), 14 7/8 in. (37.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 3/4 in. (7 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. It chunky medium C shaped neck and heavy body about 7.5-8 lbs Scale length is 25 3/4 in. (654 mm.) Width of nut is 1 13/16 in. (46 mm.). The 'Thin Twin' was so named because of its double 'blade' pickups, tips of a giant magnet and coil (from a refrigerator as are the pick ups on Ry Cooders guitars)) Also nicknamed the 'Jimmy Reed' model because of its association with the seminal bluesman. Howlin' Wolf's guitarist, Hubert Sumlin, has also been seen workin' this axe, among others..
